The Seventies"

Although created later and somewhat larger in size (approx. 38 x 26 cm), the eight graphics that comprise this series of erotic drawings are reminiscent in style, content and signature of the drawings from the Leningrad Album. The date is incomplete and partly cut out, so that only the digit 7 remains, which prompted the artist to name the series the Seventies. Therefore, we follow the inscription on the cover:

"Семидесятые" "The Seventies"

Although created later and somewhat larger in size (approx. 38 x 26 cm), the eight graphics that comprise this series of erotic drawings are reminiscent in style, content and signature of the drawings from the Leningrad Album. The date is incomplete and partly cut out, so that only the digit 7 remains, which prompted the artist to name the series the Seventies. Therefore, we follow the inscription on the cover:

Translation: Colour introduced in 2004, except for white, (as well as) the outlines in pencil (of the contours and dots)

and date the series to 2004, the year of its completion.

Six of the eight graphics show a young couple, presumably during their first erotic encounter. The other two are sketches of heads and bodies. The delicate figures of the boy and girl who are both undressing, separated by a screen, exude curiosity, desire and embarrassment. Geometric shapes suggesting the interior contrast with the figures and create perspective. The black-shaded parallelograms of the shadows on the wall, as well as the semi-transparent white of the screen, the bookshelf and the cone of light from the lamp surround the lovers with a protective capsule. Together with the brownish yellow of the paper, black and white form the chromatic triad of the drawings.

In 2004 the shining, plastic-looking neon colours were introduced – yellow, pink, green, purple, red and blue – each drawing receiving a cross in one of these colours. This unusual detail adds an important symbol to the narrative content of the drawings and at the same time creates a formal as well as chromatic counterpoint. The circular outlines around the dots, also created in 2004, condense the space around the figures and bring it into swinging motion. This particularly animates the contemplative atmosphere of the sixth drawing.

It is only at second glance that some interesting details become evident. For instance, the shadow on the floor cast by the girl’s feet in the second drawing: she hovers several centimetres above it like a Nike. Or the figure’s hips turned back to front in the first drawing. Moreover, it is not even clear whether she is standing before or behind the screen, to say nothing of her exposed ribcage and skull bones.

If the Leningrad Album could be called a great symphony on the awakening of desire, this series would be more fittingly described as chamber music. The instrumentation here is less magnificent, yet the movements of the composition are so skilfully and precisely arranged that their secrets are only gradually discovered.
