The Italian Series

Grouped due to their subject matter, these eleven graphics on tissue paper were subsequently united into the Italian Series (nine in 2005, two more added in 2007, each having the size of 74.5 x 49.5 cm). The individual works remained untitled.

These works include religious motifs and – quite unusually for Evgenij Kozlov's oeuvre – cityscapes or, to be more precise, architectural vistas. With their masterly execution, they are reminiscent of the paintings and drawings of the Italian Renaissance and it is tempting to find specific sources for these works, e.g. Raphael’s sketches for The Entombment of Christ in the first drawing, Paolo Veronese’s The Finding of Moses for the figurative scene in the third drawing and Leonardo da Vinci's Jacobus Maior for the woman’s head in the eighth drawing.

However, the kinship between Kozlov and the Renaissance artists lies rather in his method of artistic creation, in the "disegno", a key concept of the Renaissance art. In "disegno", the form originates simultaneously with the idea and directly out of the idea. This produces the immediacy of the representation, which is the opposite of reproduction.

The artist knows and appreciates the great masters, but he creates new compositions with new symbols. This may be illustrated with the sixth picture in the series, a Carrying of the Cross. This motif is well-known from Raphael and other masters, but it is for the first time an artist introduces a female character as a cross-bearer. Traditionally, the only female characters depicted in this context are the women lamenting for Jesus. The figure might be a female Jesus or, like Simon of Cyrene, be there to help him to carry the cross. Both interpretations would be a provocation for traditionalists, not to mention the fact that she is naked. Her nakedness, however, completely corresponds to the natural state of the woman who gives herself over to her mission of carrying the world’s cross: both the horizontal and the vertical beam of the cross are slightly curved, which matches the curve of the Earth's surface. We also see this curve in the net of lines in drawing four, five, ten and eleven, where they crisscross the globe like parallels and meridians.

The obvious strength of this graceful woman is also present in the first drawing, the Entombment of Christ. We feel the weight of the body in the woman’s arms and at the same time see that she is able and willing to bear this weight: her look is full of deepest compassion.

Without any doubt, the immediacy of the representation lies also in the technical means employed by the artist. When he applies liquid paint to the very thin and ultra absorbent tissue paper, he must draw the brush very quickly so that the paint does not spread along the stroke, unless that particular effect is intended. We see where the stroke begins and where it ends and can perceive the movement of the hand. Numerous dots or stains feign spontaneity; large areas are spotted with liquid candle wax. All in all, it creates the impression that the drawings were painted at one sitting. It is particularly tempting to compare the front side with the back.

Due to the transparency of the tissue paper, these graphics can be viewed from either side and it is extremely tempting to do so. When viewed from behind the colours are less intense, the image is mirrored, and this results in a different tonal quality and mood.
