The New Artists
Pop Mekhanika featuring Westbam, Riga, 1987

Text and reseach: Hannelore Fobo, 2021

During the Riga Days of Culture Festival 1987, Sergey Kuryokhin’s Pop Mekhanika performed with DJ Westbam (West-Berlin). The date was 15 April 1987; the location could not be established.

The same year, Low Spirit (Berlin) released the LP “Pop Mekhanika featuring Westbam. Live at Riga”.

On the back cover of the LP are several pictures taken at the concert (the photographer’s name is not indicated).

The pictures show three paintings taken from Leningrad to complete the stage: “Timur on Horseback” by (E-E) Evgenij Kozlov, a painting by Sergei Bugaev and a third painting, probably a joint work by Andrey Krisanov and some other artists.

Note:

Ksenia Novikova’s chronicle in the New Artists catalogue (Moscow Museum of Modern Art, 2012, p. 276) has the following entry for the year 1987:

    April
    Riga. Office of Rigas Modes.
The festival Days of Culture – Art Kontakt. The New Artists featured in the festival programme: Oleg Kotelnikov, Ivan Sotnikov, Evgenij Kozlov, Timur Novikov, Sergei “Afrika” Bugaev, Inal Savchenkov.

According to information I recieved from Irena Buzinska (Riga) in early 2021, the New Artists did not exhibit their works at the Office of Rigas Modes, but some Leningrad artists from the older generation of TEII members showed their works at the Railroad Workers’ Palace of Culture.

Possibly, works by all six New Artists mentioned in the chronicle were displayed during the Pop Mekhanika-Westbam concert.
