Happy New Year: Timur Novikov’s catalogue. List of works

Timur Novikov’s typescript catalogue consists of twelve pages and was edited in several copies in 1986. He probably edited it some time after the exhbition, as he listed an exhibition at Tallin, (March) 1986, too. The catalogue has not yet been republished, and I would like to express my gratitude to Masha Novikova-Savelieva (Маша Новикова-Савельева) for supplying me with digital copies.

Novikov calls the show, simultaneously, the six / the fifth exhibition of the New Artists; it is the fifth, if the first is called the “zero” exhibition. The catalogue contains a short introduction and one page dedicated to each of the participating artists, with the exception of Arkady Tager and Natalya Batishesva; they are both referred to as “two invited artists”, without names. The artists’ presentations differ: some were given small descriptions or texts, other appear with a list of exhibited works only. Novikov presents himself with a long list of exhibitions, but does not specify any of his works.

Novikov indicates “Бег / The Flight”, one of Kotelnikov’s paintings, as a joint work with Medvedev. Another joint work from Kotelnikov’s list is the one co-authored with Yufit, “Твистуны / Twisters”. Novikov’s catalogue lists no other works by Evgeny Yufit, and the same goes for Andrey Medvedev. Novikov, however, reacted differently to this somehow ‘marginal” participation: while Yufit is presented as participating artist, there is no other mention of Medvedev, neither in the catalogue nor in his article “ПРАЗДНИК ИСКУССТВ” (The Celebration of Art), a review he published under his pseudonym Igor Potapov, dated 1985. In the catalogue, Novikov calls Yufit “a well-known film director, actor, master of photography and painter, one of the founders of the literary style of Necrorealism”. Apparently, in 1985 he attached great importance to Yufit’s artistic achievements and less importance to Medvedev’s.

The works' sizes should be considered to be approximative. For instance, the size of Kotelnikov's / Sotnikov's “Portrait of Kovalsky” is 308 x 105, and not 400 x 180 cm, as indicated by Novikov. I translated those titles into English that have not been translated elsewhere. So far, four works in (E-E) Evgenij Kozlov's pictures could be identified.
